The blog has moved into its fifth year!
To be honest, I’m surprised I’ve managed to keep it going so long with a deadline of every single weekday! πŸ˜›

At first I remember I kept making mistakes in reports and caused a load of problems to everyone involved, including all of you – the customers, but I think I’ve definitely managed to cute down on those kind of errors now! (Except in some cases… like figma #100… )

When I started working at GSC, I made one promise to myself:

I might be making less mistakes than before, but as I continue I often wonder if I’m forgetting something important. So today I’m going to be taking some pictures of my favorite figures, and thinking about what exactly is it that makes them so special. To all those waiting for more product reviews – just be a little more patient! More are coming soon! So let me start with my single best things about figures!

(οΎŸβˆ€οΎŸ) You can touch them!!

Yep, you can see and touch a figure from any angle you please!

Something you can’t ever do in manga, games or anime!

The 2D has become 3D and become a step closer to the real world – a piece of the world of fantasy we love and adore has made its way into our real world, where we can put it on our desks and enjoy their company whenever we like! Isn’t that alone incredible!?

The figures you see here are the figures that acted as a catalyst for me getting a job here at Good Smile Company – the Fate/stay night Trading Figures. I was always a fan of the fate series, but seeing Takeuchi’s illustrations jump to life as figures was an incredible shock to my system – I couldn’t believe how incredible they were.

Plus they were such amazing quality for just 500JPY!

At that time I was collecting all sorts of gachapon and trading figures, and often felt that some work on the coloring or sculpting was sub-par – but I figured it couldn’t be helped due to the price. But just around that time all sorts of gachapon figures started to reach a whole new level of quality. Above my monitor you can still see Kaiyodo’s Chii gachapon figure, or Yujin Figure’s Lilith – those figures were so incredible that I couldn’t believe how little they cost. I still think it was all thanks to Kaiyodo that I ever got into the world of figures, and for that I will be eternally grateful.

So then I sent off my CV to Good Smile! πŸ˜€

I managed to reach the interviews for the job, and explained how impressed I was that Ilya’s coat could be removed leaving perfect sculpting behind to Aki and Akiyama.

You can put figures at any angle you like, and see them in ways you can never see from just illustrations!

It might make me sound a little crazy, but when I really like a series or character, I really seriously wish I could jump into their world. I can’t count the times I’ve heard friends that don’t understand saying things like “but it’s just a picture”, or “That’s just paper”.

But when I have figures, it’s like the world has come to my side – it’s like I’m in the same world as them, and can enjoy it so much more than just reading the manga or watching the anime. It’s a bit embarressing telling all my fellow workers at Good Smile all this, but I see it as a way of showing just how much I adore figures – they really are a part of my life!

(οΎŸβˆ€οΎŸ) Sculpting is the epitome of fine art!

Just look how beautiful figures come out!

As I said before, I really adore figures – but even if you didn’t hear my whole story behind why, I’m sure many people can understand just by looking at how stunning they are! Obviously they are all based on wonderful characters in the first place, but I really feel that figures themselves should be placed in a whole new artistic category.

Whilst they are based on an illustration, the figure version needs to be arranged in such a way that you can look at it from any angle and still have the correct proportions and look – it’s really a job that requires a lot of attention to detail, which explains why I see sculptors as having one of the most incredible jobs there is.

Some of my personal favorites are Bβ˜…RS and Saber Lily!

Both of which are products sculpted by Good Smile’s wonderful sculptors! They really are so beautiful that I can’t help let out a sigh when I see them – this really is what I believe to be the work of top-notch sculptors!

As far as products I liked before joining Good Smile – I always loved Max Factory’s Jiburiru, I still have it displayed even now. That twisted body is such a wonder to look at!!

Changing the subject a little – moving on to my favorite sculptor, who at the moment is Chieri! No matter if it’s a luscious looking body, a really difficult pose or just a very nice natural look – Chieri always manages to get it all done perfectly. The cream of the crop! The figures done in bath scenes are – albeit a bit naughty – really incredible to look at…

Well, that was a quick blog looking at some of the wonders of figures and sculpting, but let me summarize it all up quick…

I absolutely love figures!!

I just wish I could pass on just how wonderful they are to more and more people – the one problem is I don’t want to seem like I’m constantly doing advertising and nothing else. πŸ˜›

Of course there are others that also pass on the wonders of figures, and I won’t stop doing what I have been for the past five years!

I also wonder – what was it that got you into figures?
Send me a mail and let me know – I’d love to find out what started everyone’s love for figures!
Anyway, that’s all for today!
I hope to see you all again tomorrow!! (γƒ»βˆ€γƒ»)γƒŽγ‚›

So today we’ll be taking a look at this figure!

The Second Part of the Cheerful JAPAN! Project!

Nendoroid Puchitto Rock Shooter: Cheerful Ver.!

The 2nd part of the Cheerful JAPAN! Project brings a Nendoroid of Puchitto Rock Shooter herself from the NicoNico Application based on Black Rock Shooter – ‘Puchitto Rock Shooter’! As with most of the Cheerful Nendoroids she is wearing a lovely cheerleader outfit and is ready to cheer on for anyone who needs it!

The damage that has occurred during the March 11 quake in the Touhoku region is astounding, and in order to get over the destruction caused there is a lot that needs to be done, and lots of support that needs to be given. Good Smile Company has formed a support group named ‘Cheerful Japan’ which will strive to support the relief efforts for as long as possible. For at least 1 year we be releasing charity products among other efforts to raise donation money for the cause.
Cheerful JAPAN!

This is how she looks from the back!

She is wearing a lovely bright orange cheerleader outfit which is such a great energetic color to bring a smile to everyone’s face – she also has matching ribbons in her hair, which can be removed if you’d prefer not to have them. She also of course has joints in her twin tails they can be posed in all sorts of directions!

The well-known ‘cheerful’ parts are also all included!

First up are pompons and arms to hold them!

The pompons for Shooter-chan are the same brilliant blue of the flame that you can place over her left eye! The pompons included with her are also a different sculpt to those included with the Vocaloid: Cheerful Ver. figures, so there is some variety in that sense as well!

A support flag and arms to hold it!
The flag has the Cheerful Japan! logo plastered on the front – and Shooter-chan can wave it around to let everyone know she is cheering for Japan!

If you combine the flag with the bent legs it makes for an even more energetic pose! I really think this shot makes her look super cute!

She also comes with an alternate expression!

You can use this expression together with the standard Nendoroid Black Rock Shooter to recreate battle scenes of Puchitto Rock Shooter! πŸ˜›

Of course you can also just use it with the cheerleader outfit like above, it’s like she is telling me to work harder! Right – time to get to work!!

Rin is trying on the new cheerleader outfit!

Although… Shooter-chan has a scar on her chest which might make some people wonder what happened to Rin…. I’ve carefully placed the pompons in the way, so that’s definitely one way of dealing with that problem. πŸ˜›

Yes! Perfect!!

Shooter-chan has black hair which suits KAITO’s new outfit perfectly!!

When your best characters are all dressed up to cheer, you really do feel energized looking at them!

As I mentioned before, the outfit Shooter-chan is wearing here is from the Nendoroid KAITO: Cheerful Ver..

Along with the new outfit and cheerful items he also comes with everything from the previous Nendoroid KAITO! He was also made into a cheerful version as we knew he was well overdue for a resale, an only costs 3000JPY – plus for each sale made, Good Smile Company will donate 1000JPY to aid relief efforts.

You can order Nendoroid KAITO: Cheerful Ver.Β  until 20:00 JST on the 27th of October!

Don’t miss out!

DM-chan! You look so adorable!!

I was wondering how it would look to put the ribbons on her horns – I think it’s come out quite nicely! But they really are just balanced there at the moment and will fall off very easily – I’m sure some double-sided tape could fix that up though!

Yep, it’s the first time we’ll be taking a look at the base for this figure!
I’m sure some people will take a guess as to how it’ll look – but we’ll take a closer look at it later!

This is how she looks from the back!

You can’t have a Mayoi-chan figure without her giant bird-shaped backpack! As you can see it really is big enough to hide almost all of Mayoi-chan behind it – and it’s rather heavy as well! πŸ˜›

A truly charming pose!!

She has such an innocent look on her face, but in contrast she is untying the ribbon around her neck with her mouth! The gap between the cute and the sexy is absolutely wonderful!

A closer look at her feet!

Hmm, no objections from me here. I’m personally a big fan of the line from her hips down to her thighs – it might be hidden underneath the skirt, but you can still get a good idea of how soft it is just from the way she is sculpted! Definitely a highlight of the figure for me!

The map and shoe can be removed!

Well… it’s not so much removing the map, as simply just placing it wherever you prefer. The shoe can be placed half way on like in the original illustration, or simply removed entirely. The map is supposed to be placed on her thighs, but it might be seen as covering up those wonderful thighs, so if you’d rather leave it off then you have that option! πŸ˜›

I’m very proud of this shot!

But I guess it’s mostly due to the fact tat the figure is so wonderful, more than my photography skills! πŸ˜› I hope that at least some of the people who look at it will like it as much as I did. I call it “The boundary line of a young girl”.

Let’s take a look at the base now…

It recreates the BD/DVD package even more than before!

The figure is of course based on the 2nd volumes package illustration, and so the base was made to look like the background of the illustration! The shadow of Arararararagi-kun is also visible on the base!

This is the 5th in a series of figures that have all had incredibly detailed bases, so some might be disappointed here – but remember she has the huge backpack, plus the price is considerably lower than the previous four figures.

The backpack can also be removed!

Although the pose does look a little bit odd without the backpack there. πŸ˜›
I suppose that means that you can easily put something in it’s place, however!

This is how she looks from the back!

The backpack has the bumps to connect onto Mayoi, so the figure of Mayoi herself looks just fine without the backpack attached. I actually really like the way she looks from this angle! The curved hips and soft looking arm come out very nicely!

There might be some of you that may be wondering this… but it really was a nail-biting start right from the entrance for all of us!

Wondering whether our Miku 2011 SUPER GT will be able to take gold in the final race!

Let’s take a quick look at how amazing this race is – for each race, the higher you rank in, the more points you receive. The only problem is, the more points you have, the more of a handicap you receive in the following race.Β  There are 8 races each year, and the team with the most points at the end will be the champions for that year. Our Miku has managed to pull first place positions twice this year, so it was all up in the air as to whether or not she would be able to take the champion title for this year’s series.

An overview of the race course!

The cars obviously all drive along the blue line on this map. As I only ever really play the games I thought the course seemed fairly small – but it really isn’t – it actually covers a huge amount of space!

First off we went to the area shown in purple!

The seats just at the finish line!

Hmmm… these seem like very high quality seats that should be used for the most dedicated fans… and here I am as a complete amateur. The seat even had ‘VIP’ written on it… I’m so sorry everyone who wanted these seats! xD

But I promise that I’ll be cheering as much as I possibly can!

Miku is also here to cheer on!

It was cloudy with little drizzles of rain the whole morning. It was also rather humid and not really the best weather for an event like this… but looking at the Miku car’s track record, rainy days always gave her the upper edge!

If the rain allows Miku to win, then I’ll gladly pray for even more rain! πŸ˜›

Next up we moved on to the pit area!

The pit is where all the cars for the race are held! (I think… :P)

It looks so close on the map, but it was quite far to walk!

It must have taken about 10 minutes to walk from the seats before down to the pit area. (You need to go underground, so some of that is also climbing up and down…)

It makes me wonder how long it would take to walk around the entire course… :O

This is the behind the pit area!

Very close to the pit is this tent where all the people involved can watch how the race is progressing. All the personal sponsors of the Miku car are also all written up here for everyone to see!! A huge thank you to everyone who helped with the sponsorship!

This is how it looks inside!

Aki and Emi are hard at work it seems! The championship title is up for grabs, so they’re all putting their absolute best into this one!

Great outfits on super cute girls!

These three have come to support Racing Miku and add even more to the upcoming race! The outfits they’re wearing are of course the same that Racing Miku wears! They are so very cute!!

Let’s rush down to the pit!

The Miku car is being prepared!!

I really didn’t want to bother anyone before such an important race, but I did grab permission to take a few pictures! Thanks –Β  you won’t even notice that I’m here!!

This is how it looks from the back!

The tires have not yet been put on, and all sorts of parts still seem to be missing. The mechanics are really trying to make sure that there are no problems, so Miku can race in her very best condition! Just look at the serious expression on the mechanic’s face!

And a look from the front end!

The Miku car is car number 4!

In just a few hours she’ll be dashing out into the race! Good luck, Miku!!

The front area of the pit!

I must say that the pit area is a lot smaller than I expected…! In such a tiny area the mechanics have to work without error as fast as possible… the pressure must be really intense. It also really shows that the race is also a lot about teamwork as well.

It’s time for the pit walk!

During the pit walk time, you can walk around the pit areas and take a closer look at your favorite cars.

The pit walk begins!

The left side of this photo is filled with people because each team’s race queens are all lined up and everyone is free to take photos! The three Racing Miku Supporters were super popular!!

Look how busy the pit area was as well!

It was actually really hard to even move around… so many people can to take a look at the Miku car! I hope that all this support will give Miku the power she needs to win!

The race is about to begin!!

Can you see the Miku car? The arrow is pointing it out!

In the preliminary yesterday, Miku placed first giving her pole position for this race!

Pole position allows Miku to be in the very front position of the race. In the photo you’ll see a few other cars in front of her as well, but they are GT500 cars. Miku is a GT300, and is in front of all the other GT300 cars.

The race has begun!

Miku is unbelievably fast!!!

I was really worried I wouldn’t be able to get a clear shot of the Miku car during the race because it was moving too quickly! I’m glad some of the pictures managed to come out nicely… πŸ˜›

The red car behind Miku at the moment is #11 – Miku’s rival car who also has a shot at the championship with this race! Don’t lose Miku! You can do it!

The Eva RT Unit 1!

There were other itasha racing cars along with Miku! The Eva one you can see here, plus there is also the Ika-musume car that was in this race!

The race is mid-way, let’s check out the back!

Miku hasn’t lost first place once yet, and the staff are all working hard and keeping their spirits as high as possible to continue cheering on the team! The twitter team is also sending out tweets letting everyone know how the race is progressing for Miku!

Almost at the finish line!!

I went with the rest of the staff to the pit to see the final stretch!

The Miku car is the first one to appear!

Which means…!!!

The 8th race ends in victory!! The champion for the series has been decided!!

Banba, the driver, Suzuki, the team representative, Oohashi, the director and Ukyou Katayama!

The Final Race’s Winners!

The Season Champions!!

It’s taken 4 years to reach this spot, but they did it! A very big thanks to all of those who have supported the team up until this point – they got here thanks to all of you as well!

The director enjoys some champagne!

The fellow teams that competed against them were also there to join in the celebrations! Even the rival red car #11’s team was happy to join in the fun!

The 2011 SUPER GT has come to an end!

After four years, the team has finally come out with the best possible result!

A big thanks to everyone on the team, all the Good Smile Racing staff and all the personal sponsors for the team – this is all thanks to you!

I really cannot thank everyone enough for all the support the team has received – even those who have simply been cheering on from home, thanks to you as well! Good Smile Racing will continue to work to their very best thanks to all

There will also be some print races on the 11th and 12th of November!
Our team will be competing there as well, so I hope you’ll be cheering for them!

But that’s all for today!
I hope to see you all again tomorrow!

Starting this week, the GSC Cafe…

Is transforming into a Fate/TYPE-MOON Cafe!

I’m sure that is a matter of interest at the moment, but let’s first take a look inside the cafe! As many of you may know, I’m a huge Fate fan myself. There are loads of fans here at Good Smile!

Inside the store are all the character designs used for Fate/Zero, which is now airing here in Japan! It’s definitely one of the most anticipated series this season, so if you haven’t checked it out be sure to do so!

You can enjoy looking at the detailed illustrations of your favorite characters while munching on some delicious food! The little Rin is so adorable!!

The sofas are surrounded by special extras!!

The Good Smile Cafe is well known for it’s giant extras that go along with the theme! πŸ˜›

This time there are three different 1/1 scale items!

Can you tell what they all are from the image above?

First up is Excalibur!

Saber’s weapon from Fate/stay night!!

The base beneath it has a light shining up giving it a really stunning glow, really adding to the atmosphere!!

(*Β΄Π”ο½€) o0○ It’s THE sword that Saber-san fights with!

Just imagining that puts a smile on my face! πŸ˜› Unfortunately you’re not allowed to actually hold it or even touch it – but photos are welcome! Be sure to grab a picture if you stop by the store!

Neko-Arc! //Π€Ο‰Π€)

It’s huge! Absolutely huge! At the base you can see the Nendoroid Neko-Arc as a comparison.

It’s really a 1/1 scale version!

I want one at the entrance to my own house!

Unfortunately there are no plans to sell it at present. Too bad. πŸ˜› You’re also welcome to take photos of this one!Β  //Π€Ο‰Π€)

The Thompson Contender that Kiritsugu uses!

Oooh! This one is also incredible! This one is displayed inside a glass case – it’s very important to Fate/Zero!

You can even purchase a cast-version of this one!

You’ll need to put it together and paint it yourself, but it’s still a must have for fans!

And in the corner next to it you can find…

The real Fate/Zero script!

I wanna read it!!

But it’ll spoil the anime, so I didn’t take a look…. plus breaking glass is probably a little dangerous. πŸ˜›

The covers alone are amazing to look at!

These are really amazingly rare items to have in the cafe! It’s incredible!

The Jyapunika Assassination Books!

They even have Sakura’s name written on them! πŸ˜›

These are actually books for customers to leave their own thoughts and illustrations! There have already been three books since the Type-Moon cafe started.

There is also a special menu!

Let’s take a look at the special menu items!

Sword of Promised Victory (Excalibur)!

A drink that makes use of Saber’s image color! It’s a blue curaΓ§ao with a nice grapefruit flavor! There are also floating yellow pieces of grapefruit in the drink which makes it really delicious!

Magus of Five Elements (Average One)Β  and Makiri’s Glass!

These are based on Rin and Sakura’s image colors! Rin’s is rose-hip flavored with red ice floating inside to represent red jewels.

Then the Makiri’s Glass!

You get to drink from the fabled Makiri’s glass!! What flavor can it be?!

It really somehow seems like a very Sakura-like drink! It’s a very sweet drink that I think will really suit most girl’s tastes!

For each drink you order you will also get a coaster!

It makes it quite hard to decide which one to get!!
It’s so tempting to grab them all!

Now onto the food menu!

You Can Live on Just This

~Be Calm and Graceful~

An eggplant and mushroom pasta!! The flag at the top is drawn by Nasu-san, and you’re free to take it home! Nasu-san is really like an idol to me, so I was ecstatic to see a feature like this!

The Emiya Plate! (with rice and miso soup!)

Designed off the Emiya family dinners!

Another definite must try for fans of the series!!

Which of course, includes me!! It also comes with a bowl of rice and miso soup. Just imagine yourself in the Emiya home while enjoying this wonderful meal!

And finally, the desserts!

The Command Seal !

Pancakes coated with some cocoa powder that looks like a command seal! The command seal is random each time you order, so you have to hope you get your favorite character’s!

It also comes with a side of chocolate ice-cream and some cream to enjoy however you want!

Carnival Phantasm Pudding!

From the left: Fantas Moon (Ark), Magical Amber (Amber) and Kaleid Ruby (Rin)

The caramel sauce in each is made with the color to suit each character!

For each food or dessert you order, you’ll also receive a lovely place mat! It features the line-up of Sabers – blue, red, white and black!

On the back is UNLIMITED BLADE WORKS, which is also awesome! These are free to take home with you after your meal, so bring along something to carry it in without it getting squished!

Comi-Po! Manga Contest

Comi-Po! is hosting a manga contest in commemoration of the release of Nendoroid Gumako: Cheerful ver!

All you have to do is make a manga that features a photo of your Gumako imported into a manga panel!

You can even make a manga that also features the 3D characters like Comipo-chan as well. There is even a special free version of Comi-po that you can download and use for the contest! The winning entry will receive a prize, so join in the fun!

In other words, you need to make manga using the software, ‘Comi-Po!’

Using the free version I gave it a go myself! Although I’m not very good with most software… πŸ˜› And before all of you ask why I’m working in the web department… there is a fine line between being good and enjoying something. πŸ˜›

Anyway, I was looking for something to use as a base and found this!

This brings back memories!!

This was from when Good Smile was still based in an apartment in Matsudo – it was put up on a certain famous Akiba blog. In a serious column this ended up at the very end – it’s also the very first one!

Back then I had just joined Good Smile and worked with the design team’s boss in a tiny little room. I remember everything being really hectic back then… At the time (about 5 years ago) we also never expected to see the Good Smile Seijin becoming plushies and figures!

So today I’ll make a comic using a GSC Seijin figure!

I have installed Comi-Po!

I think I’ll just use the first and second panels as they are, so I just import a file into Comi-Po using File -> Import Custom Image!

Just drop the imported image onto the canvas!

Ah! It’s so simple! I think even I could get the hang of this! I decided to import the image as is, but the program also allows you to create each panel separately using all sorts of backgrounds, things and characters!

The characters are particularly fun to play with, as you can place them at any angle you like (obviously only the default characters, however.)

Even if you can’t draw yourself, you can still easily make manga!

The GSC Seijin figure!

Now I’m going to use this image and import it into the manga! I just need to cut out the GSC Seijin from the background and save it as a .png.

You can easily change the color and size!

If you simply click the item a guide will pop up, and if you hold the Shift key you can change the size with just a quick mouse movement! Then you just need to right click and the item will appear on the panel, where you can meddle with all sorts of settings such as the hue of the image.

I also tried using the built-in materials!

Effects that are often used in manga are all lined up and easy to throw onto any panel! Just pick the one you want from the list on the left and drag it onto your manga!

And here is the final product!!

GSC Seijin Invasion!

Yep! Today’s figure has a load of wondrous optional parts! I almost wanted to start today’s blog with them, but I’ll start as normal – scroll down fast if you can’t wait! πŸ˜›

From Hanasaku Iroha:
Nendoroid Ohana Matsumae!

Her character designer is Meru Kishida, well known for his work on the Atelier series of games! Meru’s detailed character design has been shrunk down into adorable Nendoroid size!

This is how she looks from the back!

She is wearing the uniform she wears for her work at Kissuisou – the Japanese inn that she started to work at. The apron, ribbon, socks and even geta shoes are all very detailed even as a Nendoroid! As a side note… Oda-P seem s to be in charge of loads of characters in kimonos at the moment. ^^;

Let’s move onto the optional parts!

First up is a determined expression!

A perfect expression for the honest and frank Ohana-chan! Working as hard as she can, even when she is new to the work!

She also has trays with legs for the customers at the inn!

These are of course the trays she used to carry food to those staying at the inn – and she even comes with two, stacked up on each other! You could probably place all sorts of things on the tray for an even more convincing rendition!

Next up is a surprised expression!

Ohana has all sorts of expressions in the series – so it’s nice to have some variety on the Nendoroid as well! Both the shoulder area and the area where her bare arms start are posable, allowing for all kinds of poses!

A wooden broom and arms to hold it!

Once she has finished carrying the food t all the customers, she needs to head to the entrance and clean up a bit… it seems she has come across a rather peculiar looking animal though. (Kyubey isn’t included! ^^;)

The extra parts that come with Ohana-chan are really nice big things like the trays and broom, it’s fun to play around with them!

A Blue Heron!

Not this time! The Blue Heron is included as well!

Ohana meets with this giant bird on the way to Kissuisou’s rival inn, Fukuya. She really isn’t good with dealing with this particular bird!! The gradient used on the wings is really beautiful… plus it is really posed in a menacing pose which is perfect for the series! πŸ˜›

And finally…!!

We’ve already seen so many amazing parts… but this next one is quite different to normal. Of all the Nendoroids that have been made… I never expected parts like these! xD

A Bondage Body!

Those who have not seen the series might be wondering just what Good Smile gets up to in their spare time… πŸ˜› I don’t want to spoil too much from the series, but let’s just say that she ends up like this in a scene from the third episode in the series – and these parts let you recreate that scene!

She even comes with the mouth gag!!

Which can also be removed, of course. I was quite amazed to see the permission to make these parts come out! ^^;

This is how it looks from the back!

Looking from this angle, experts might point out that the tying isn’t done correctly – but even in the series the line “I just can’t get it right” came up. You have to be impressed that he at least tried it, right? πŸ˜› I can’t wait to use these parts with some other figures… ^^;
